Nothing is more damaging to your site's performance on the search engines, if you have broken links (links which lead to pages which do not exist)

Two good tips here are the Xenu Link Checker and the GSiteCrawler. Both sadly are not the most attractive of applications, and require Windows to run - that said, they do perform their respective jobs very well indeed. Xenu Link Checker is a simple application that crawls a web site from a URL, and reports back on any dead links it finds. GSiteCrawler does a similar job.
